Share Your Start-Up Story – Weroom

Making an impact in the sharing economy – Weroom is an online flatsharing marketplace giving people  a stress-free experience of sharing a flat.

Thomas Villeneuve created Weroom after a bad experience of sharing a flat, which inspired him to see tenants given a lot more choice in how they rent.

Weroom concept took off in Paris in 2013 before expanding to the UK in 2014. The sharing startup acts as a social network uniting landlords and potential tenants to help everyone find the ideal flatshare home.

Entry of Weroom

We are the only company in the UK that allows users to secure a room with a deposit. We don’t transfer these funds over to the landlord until 48hrs after the tenant has viewed the property and say it is how the flat appeared in the advert.

I first came up with the idea for Weroom after I had a bad experience in a flatshare myself. It helped me spot a gap in the market for a social network dedicated to flatsharing and matching people to their ideal flatmates as well as their ideal home.

Our biggest success would have to be how much we’ve enlarged over such a short space of time.

We have grown five-fold in the last year and have gone from 40,000 users at the start of 2015 to over 200,000 active members in the UK today.

The number of rooms listed on the website has likewise grown rapidly, from 1,000 to 10,000 within that same time frame.

Why Entrepreneurship

I come from a family of entrepreneurs and I knew from an early age that I wanted to learn more and be a part of this whole new dynamic world of innovation.

When I was younger I used my holidays to travel to countries including India, Brazil and Russia, which were the new economy hotspots at the time, to learn more about emerging trends.

The Future Of Weroom

We aim to keep growing and further increasing our share of voice in the flatsharing market. We will be funding further international expansion for Weroom into other parts of Europe and Canada, as well as implementing a new review system and offering insurance cover as part of their service to users in the UK.
