Job-hiring app Job Today teams up with acclaimed British photographer Lewis Khan for a collection of photos showcasing women – aged 16 to 29 years old – working weekend jobs to pursue their creative and entrepreneurial dreams.
Named Saturday Girls: The Evolution of Women in the British Workforce, this documentary-style photo exhibition celebrates British women working casual jobs across different sectors.
Dubbed as ‘the first UK photography exhibition of young women on the job across Britain’, the project also explores the iconic role of the Saturday girl, and how this has changed over the decades.
Khan was commissioned by Job Today to travel across the UK photographing 10 workers as they juggle multiple jobs to gain financial freedom and have free time to spend on turning their dreams into reality.
Over the past few decades, working women have been on the rise in the UK. Recent research revealed a record high of 78% of women are now working in Britain, compared with 57% in 1975. This has been a continuing rise over the past 40 years.
Polina Montano, Co-Founder of Job Today said: “A century ago women couldn’t vote, get a loan or work in certain industries. Saturday Girl roles were incremental in helping women break down barriers and gain independence.
“We have now come a long way. We wanted to give a platform to showcase the all new, modern-day ‘Saturday Girl’, showing how our future female workforce is already killing it at work, doing some pretty amazing things.”
The featured women include Collette Conlin, an usher at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle, Suzie Hawkins, works as a florist to teach floristry to others, and Helen Adeyera, a weekend hairdresser studying computer science at Coventry University.
